Dedication To Public Service
The quality of being dedicated or committed to a task, purpose, thought, or action is known as dedication. An individual's dedication is an important personality trait. Employees who are committed to the organization's goals work hard to achieve them.
• A person's dedication will carry them through a period of low motivation. It's his ability to keep acting even when he's not feeling particularly motivated.
• Dedication will propel you to complete a task quickly. Employees in some occupations devote their lives to public service, even if it means sacrificing their personal lives and comfort.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEDICATION AND MOTIVATION
1. Motivation is the reason for engaging in a specific behaviour in order to achieve a goal. It is the exertion of mental forces or impulses to achieve, to encourage a desired action.
2. Motivation is fleeting. Motivated is usually a transient state. Motivation may get you started, but it won't get you to the finish line. As a result, it is suggested that you be motivated on a daily basis. Possibilities, encouragements, and even necessities inspire us.
3. Motivation is usually based on the benefit gained from completing a task. Motivation will encourage you to begin and may carry you through the initial stages of achieving a goal. However, it quickly fades away and may reappear later in the process.
4. The reason for this decline in motivation is straightforward. The brain does not send the same signals when there are no obvious benefits from our actions.
5. Despite a lack of motivation, dedication will get you through. It's your ability to keep acting even when you're not feeling motivated.
6. Dedication will get you up the mountain, while motivation will get you to base camp.
7. Self-motivation is a force within you that activates your actions without the need for external direction. It's an internal fire, a burning desire, if you will. Being self-motivated gives you the ability to make decisions. You make your own decisions and are responsible/accountable for the outcomes of your actions or inaction.
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION VS EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
• When it comes to motivation vs. dedication, competitors must understand the two types of motivation that influence their choices: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
• Intrinsic motivation is something that motivates you from within. Something external that you perceive as a reward is known as extrinsic motivation.
• Consider a group of high school students who are working diligently to improve their reading and writing skills. Their engagement and motivation can come from a variety of places.
• A student who is motivated by extrinsic factors may be working so hard to improve their literacy skills because they don't want their parents to be angry with them or because they want to attend an Ivy League university.
• These are external motivators that influence their commitment and engagement.
• Some students, on the other hand, may spend time reading and writing because they enjoy learning. To meet expectations, they don't have to struggle with discipline. Rather, they enjoy the sensations they get from completing literacy tasks. As a result, their determination is fuelled by intrinsic motivation.
• When it comes to achieving goals, most people experience a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, but the most successful people maintain a growth mind-set based on intrinsic motivation and self-awareness.
• Nonetheless, it is their dedication and commitment that earns them their rewards.
PERSEVERANCE AND COMMITMENT
1. The act or quality of sticking to a course of action, a belief, or a goal is known as perseverance. Perseverance is defined as the ability to persist or act in the face of adversity or discouragement. Perseverance refers to the ability to persevere in the face of adversity without giving up.
2. A commitment is an agreement to carry out a specific activity at a specific time in the future under specific conditions. The act of committing to a course of action is known as commitment. Commitment entails taking action. There are no justifications. There will be no debate. There will be no in-depth analysis. There will be no whining about how difficult it is.
There's no need to be concerned about what others may think. There will be no cowardly delays. This word is frequently used in relation to declarations about the seriousness of our relationships. "I'm committed to you," for example, implies that I'm not looking for another relationship.
WHY DEDICATION, PERSEVERANCE AND COMMITMENT IS NECESSARY IN CIVIL SERVICES?
1. A civil servant may face a variety of roadblocks, including social opposition to any programme, a lack of political executive support, and complex situations that necessitate extreme caution and precaution.
2. He/she may never be able to find the best solution if he/she is unwilling to help. Consider the following scenario: In rural areas, family planning programmes are generally opposed because contraceptives are considered taboo.
3. The scheme's implementation may never be realised without personal assurance and dedicated outreach.
4. Public service frequently involves unforeseen or unexpected situations that necessitate being prepared and providing quick assessments.
5. A dedicated civil servant understands this and is always willing to put forth his best effort in such situations.
6. A true civil servant ensures that no policy or action is taken that is detrimental to the general welfare of the public. An officer's commitment to public service ensures that policies are developed and implemented in a credible and efficient manner.
7. For example, one's co-workers may be involved in corruption, resulting in a larger loss of social welfare. This can be avoided by adhering to fundamental values and caring about the general public.
8. It is necessary to come up with new, innovative ideas and solutions to problems. They are impossible to achieve without commitment, perseverance, and dedication.
9. Treating civil services as just another job in India, where a large population is impoverished and many are victims of social disadvantage and vulnerability, may not provide the necessary encouragement and drive to eradicate this from society.
10. One can only effectively contribute if perseverance and dedication to service are inherent.
FACTORS THAT DETERMINE DEDICATION TO PUBLIC SERVICES
1. Institutionalisation: This is particularly true in the case of police and military forces. A new recruit is so thoroughly institutionalised in the delivery of their duty through training and drills that they are ready for "Call of Duty." Also, when they first join, the recruits are just like any other person, looking for a job and financial security, but after training and institutionalisation, they begin to prioritise the nation's interests.
2. Altruism and Self-Actualization: Statesmen, noble doctors, and honest civil servants are examples of this. Many people have Altruism as a trait in this case, and consider doing good for the country to be self-actualization of their potential and calibre. They devote their time, effort, and even work-life balance to improving public space results by using their management skills, teamwork, and knowledge. They prioritise their responsibilities and are satisfied when they complete them to the best of their abilities.
3. Early Socialization and Value Development in an Individual: Individuals who are instilled with values such as patriotism, service, and sacrifice as children reflect these values later in life by serving society. Their parents, school, and community all played a role in instilling these values in them.
4. Benevolence: - The ethical spirit of public administration is benevolence toward all. It's about the public good, whereas business administration is about the private good. "Government work is merely governmental work without benevolence." Our field takes on a new meaning and purpose with benevolence, going beyond just doing a good job; the work we do becomes noble—a kind of civic virtue."
Other factors include toleration and compassion for the weaker sections, fearlessness and courage, a spirit of service and sacrifice, and a sense of mission and focus, among others. The civil service is unlike any other job in that it requires commitment and passion to serve the country and its people.
