  • Hornbill Festival: To encourage intertribal interaction and to promote the cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December. It is also called ‘Festival of Festivals’. The festival is named after the Indian hornbill, the large and colorful forest bird which is displayed in the folklore of most of the state’s tribes. Visitors can enjoy the colorful performances, crafts, sports, local food fairs, games, and ceremonies, besides traditional arts which include paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures throughout the festival.UPSC Prelims 2024 dynamic test series
  • Chapchar Kut Festival: It is a spring festival, this is the most important festival and the only one regularly observed during the first week of March in Mizoram. On this day people of all ages, young and old, men and women dressed in their colorful costumes and distinctive head gears and jewelry, assemble and perform various folk dances, singing traditional songs accompanied by beating of drums, gongs, and cymbals. Some dances are strictly martial danced by strong virile warriors with their weapons and trophies. One dance perennially popular is the Cheraw or the “bamboo dance” so-called as long bamboo staves are used for this dance.
  • Wangala Festival: The Wangala is the most significant festival of the Garo clans of Meghalaya which is performed after the harvesting is over, generally in the month of October to November. It is a “Thanksgiving” ceremony to Misi Saljong, also known as Pattigipa Ra’rongipa (The Great Giver) for having blessed the human beings with a rich harvest of the season.
  • Sangai Festival: Every year the State of Manipur celebrates the “Manipur Sangai Festival” from 21st -30th November. The ‘Festival’ is named after the State animal, Sangai, the brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur. It started in the year 2010 and has grown over the years into a big platform for Manipur to showcase its rich tradition and culture to the world. The festival is labeled as the grandest festival of the State today and helps promote Manipur as a world-class tourism destination.
